| When I say "greatly increase" I am trying to convey my priorities, not break the bank. The answer is not just throwing money at a problem. We need to look for and encourage innovation in every program we fund, using our money more intelligently. The state legislature has been fiscally irresponsible, particularly in its prioritization of available revenue. Slashing funds to education drives new business investment away. Showering private prisons with cash while starving our schools are the wrong priorities. | |||
| Our current tax code is a mess, unfairly draining the middle class, while being unnecessarily complicated. Let?s create a nonpartisan panel of economists, accountants, business professionals, and members of the public. By designing a new code that is simple, fair and progressive we can attract more business to our state. While the use of credits is an appropriate way to help businesses get established, we need to evaluate the long-term consequences of these special deals. If we wish to incentivize an industry, the credit should be limited to five years, and then phased out over the following five years. | |||

| A smart investment will save us all money by keeping our citizens healthy by allowing them to seek lower cost options rather than using state-funded emergency rooms for care. Additionally, our economy is injured by the loss of productivity when people miss work. Studies show that the expansion of Medicaid actually saves us money. The more well care people receive, the less high priced care is needed. Since we all pay for health care costs, in part through higher rates to us to cover unreimbursed care, we all benefit. | |||
